Client of the Month: Charlotte Post Foundation


Each month, the PMA Blog will feature a past/current client that is making exceptional progress in advancing its mission and vision.  The showcased client will typically exhibit strategies that are timely and speak to challenges and opportunities facing us all.

This month’s Nonprofit of the Month is the Charlotte Post Foundation. Established in 1996, the Charlotte Post Foundation’s mission is to strategically link community resources and expertise to enhance the quality of life and educational opportunities for African American youth by:

  • Bringing the proper expertise and resources together to help define issues
  • Identifying, connecting and building capacity among entities to develop collaborative partnerships to address the issues
  • Advocating for resources to address issues
  • Providing accountability by monitoring outcomes

One of the Foundation’s primary programs is the Charlotte Post Scholars, where the organization partners with various community entities to provide supplemental support such as: academic tutoring, parent workshops and support, and peer-to-peer mentoring. Highlights from the program:

  • In 2009, the Foundation worked with Billingsville Elementary School to recruit 38 second graders who were deemed most likely to fall below proficiency levels on the 3rd grade End-of-Grade (EOG) test. The Foundation adopted the students as Post Foundation scholars and launched the pilot program by enrolling the scholars in a six-week, literacy-based summer learning program.
  • The Foundation identified another cohort of rising third graders at Billingsville Elementary in 2011. This time, the Foundation partnered with Queens University of Charlotte’s Teaching Fellows. The Teaching Fellows assisted the scholars with literacy and math skills by providing in-class and after-school tutoring help. The Foundation also collaborated with Westerly Hills Elementary to implement an after-school program for 40 students. With the help of six Westerly Hills teachers and nine teaching fellows, the Foundation was able to hold the program for two-days each week for approximately 35 weeks.
  • In 2011, the Foundation partnered with the Grier Heights Community Learning Center to provide a Saturday Academy program.  The Foundation worked with Queens University of Charlotte, utilizing Queens faculty and education majors to assist thirty scholars with academic enrichment activities. Additionally, the Foundation recruited fifteen students from Johnson C. Smith University to help with tutoring.
